On Sunday, fans of Grammy and Dove Award-nominated Fireflight received a pleasant surprise on social media when the band, seemingly out of nowhere, teased a new music release. The release on Tuesday was confirmed as the new independently released single "I Won't Look Back," scheduled for release on Feb. 9.

In a press release, the band promises a "heavy-hitting, guitar-driven single" marking "the band's return to its rock roots." The song is the first of several slated for release during 2018.

"I Won't Look Back" is produced by Fireflight and Josiah Prince of Disciple, and was inspired by the Bible verse in John 10:10: "The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full." (NIV)

The song arrives in the wake of the #MeToo social media movement that managed to give victims of sexual misconduct a voice, and the band hopes it can be an "empowering anthem" that can "break the binds of those who have suffered abuse."

The lyrics powerfully declare,

I've come to take back what was stolen, your power is broken

I'll drop a match in the shadow, as you explode,

I won't look back

Fireflight lead singer Dawn Michele explains, "Living in a culture that is often infiltrated by predators and wolves in sheep's clothing, far too many have had their innocence stolen and dignity diminished. Silenced by fear, victims of sexual assault have been left shrouded in darkness with feelings of isolation and an understanding that no one is willing to fight for them. We, as a body of believers, must advocate for all those who have been used, marginalized and taken advantage of."

"God doesn't want His children to live the rest of their lives trapped in the past, living as victims of tragedy and abuse," continues Michele. "Jesus came that we would all have life and have it to the full. Let the cry of justice for the oppressed rise up, and cast down every proud thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God."

Fans weren't slow to react, with Twitter user Jeff exclaiming, "WHOOAAAA Keep it coming y'all!" and another seemingly hyped fan, Amy, simply repeating, "Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes!"

Featuring Fireflight cofounders Dawn Michele (vocals), Wendy Drennen (bass, backing vocals) and Glenn Drennen (guitar), "I Won't Look Back" releases during a season that finds the band taking a step back from constant touring to be at home more as they raise their families. While not touring as much, the band members will continue to record and release new music they feel passionate about sharing with their fans.
