'Alien 5' News Update: Film Takes Back Seat As Blomkamp Prioritizes New Project
Fans who are itching to see "Alien 5" will have to wait a little longer, as Neill Blomkamp has prioritized another project over the franchise.
According to actress Sigourney Weaver, who portrays Ellen Ripley in the movie, Blomkamp has a lot on his plate and could not find time to work on the fifth installment. The actress confirmed the news at the San Sebastian Festival in Spain.
"He has got work to do, and I have things going on. I hope we do get to do it," said Weaver.
"It's one of those things we wanted to do this past year, but I think Ridley didn't want them all coming out at the same time," she added, referring to Ridley Scott's "Alien: Covenant," which is set for release on October 6, 2017.
While it will definitely take a long wait before "Alien 5," Weaver said she still hopes that the production will get underway as soon as Blomkamp is done with his current project.
"There is an incredible script by Neill. I didn't want to do a fifth one. I thought going to earth wouldn't be fun. I got this script that was amazing and gives fans everything they're looking for and innovates in ways that became part of the world for me. He has things to do and I have things to do. And I hope that we'll circle back around to do it once those things are done," she said.
Blomkamp recently released an official description for "Alien: Covenant," the second chapter in a prequel trilogy that began with "Prometheus" and connects directly to the first "Alien" film.
