'Alone Yet Not Alone' Oscar Nomination Revoked; Slight Misstep by the Composer Causes Board to Rescind Song
The Oscar Awards withdrew the best original song nomination for the Christian film "Alone Yet Not Alone" of the same name over claims of improper campaigning.
The board of governors made their decision on Tuesday night after claiming the song's composer, Bruce Broughton, contacted members via e-mail during the voting period.
"No matter how well-intentioned the communication, using one's position as a former governor and current executive committee member to personally promote one's own Oscar submission creates the appearance of an unfair advantage," said Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs in a statement.
"I indulged in the simplest grass roots campaign and it went against me when the song started getting attention," said Broughton in a statement. "I got taken down by competition that had months of promotion and advertising behind them. I simply asked people to find the song and consider it."
Any alleged campaigning is considered a ruling violation.
"It is the Academy's goal to ensure that the Awards competition is conducted in a fair and ethical manner," said the Academy in a statement. "If any campaign activity is determined by the board of governors to work in opposition to that goal, whether or not anticipated by these regulations, the Board of Governors may take any corrective actions ... to protect the reputation and integrity of the awards process."
No other song will be nominated in its place at the Oscars they stated.
The song "Alone Yet Not Yet Alone" was song by Joni Eareckson Tada, a 64-year-old quadriplegic woman who runs a self-less organization that donates wheelchairs to children in third world countries. She is a born again Christian who has her own faith based television show called Joni and Friends.
"I'm the least likely candidate to record a song for a movie, I'll tell you that up front, so it's amazing," said Tada to The Hollywood Reporter last week. "It's amazing enough that a family-friendly movie with a Christian theme is nominated in any category for an Academy Award. Besides The Blind Side, which was wonderful, it's just not the norm."
The setting of the film takes place during the French and Indian War, which started in 1754 and ended in 1763.
Though uncommon, this is not the first time the Academy has cancelled a nomination.
In 1992, "A Place in the World" lost its Oscar recommendation for best foreign-language film over questions over whether it was made in Argentina, and not Uruguay as it had labeled itself.
The 86th Academy Awards will air live on March 2, 2014, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
