American Idol Producers Get The Boot, The Franchise Struggles to Keep Up Ratings
The panic level of Fox's American Idol is at an all-time high.
According to TheWrap.com, the Fox reality singing competition has now fired its two executive producers, Nigel Lythgoe and Ken Warwick. This is the latest of names jumping off the Idol ship, as over the last weeks, it has been officially announced that judges Mariah Carey, Randy Jackson, and Nicki Minaj are also out. The only one who's even still potentially in is country music's Keith Urban, who's status is unknown.
An insider told Fox411's Pop Tarts column that the move had been coming for quite some time. "Both Nigel and [creator Simon Fuller] really clashed. Ken and Nigel's exit isn't surprising...It's hard for anyone involved in the production to get along with Fuller."
This isn't the worst news for Lythgoe, as he now gets to fully devote his time and energy to his true passion (and other Fox show), "So You Think You Can Dance." He has a history of dance and of adjudication, where he was a judge on the Simon Fuller production "Pop Stars", where he first earned the nickname "Nasty Nigel."
This is the latest in several Idol change-ups that we've seen over that past several years, particularly with the judges. We've now seen Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul, Ellen DeGeneres, Kara Dioguardi, Steven Tyler, and Jennifer Lopez leave the show, in addition to the judges from this season.
Is the writing on the wall for Idol? Only time will tell, but it sure doesn't look good.
