Another School Shooting! This Time in the Atlanta Metro Area.
Another school shooting has again taken place. Tuesday August 20, 2013. Ronald E. McNair Learning Academy in the Atlanta Metro area suffered a school shooting today. The school was going back in session for the fall academic year.
Twenty year old Michael Brandon is currently in custody after firing an assault rifle in the elementary school during a confrontation. The incident caused 800 plus students to be evacuated from the school and police to return fire.
The school has uses a system that requires visitors to be buzzed in, but the protocol fell short when gunman Brandon bypassed security after slipping into the school behind someone who was authorized to enter, but Brandon didn't get far. An office attendant stopped Brandon and he fired six shots with an assault rifle and that's when officers fired back. Office attendant Antoinette Tuff convinced the gunman to drop his weapon and his backpack filled with ammunition.
Thankfully, no one was injured and the gunman was quickly apprehended. All the students who attend Ronald E. McNair Learning Academy were all accounted for and reunited with their parents who were on standby at a Walmart close to the school.
Michael Thurmond, DeKalb County Schools Superintendent released a statement saying "It's a blessed day. All of our children are safe."
