Apple AirPort Latest Update: Company Cuts Off Non-Earning Division?
The latest news doesn't bode well for the Apple AirPort after it was reported that the company is abolishing one of its divisions that is not contributing too much in terms of revenues.
This should not come as a surprise considering that mainstream news sites have extensively reported about engineers working on the Apple AirPort have been reassigned to other projects. With the reassignment, the company clearly has no plans of updating the technology, Bloomberg reported.
According to news reports, the Apple AirPort has three segments. The entry level costs $99 and you get a dual-band 802.11n Wi-Fi together with wireless music playback and printing. The second product is called the Express which gets the customer 802.11ac Wi-Fi, printer and hard drive sharing along with stronger signal.
The Apple AirPort Time Capsule, meanwhile, is more expensive. Priced from $299 to $399, you get a built-in hard drive that enables backups through the Time Machine software. You also get a 2-3 terrabyte hard drive. It's also using the 802.11ac Wi-Fi.
Bloomberg said it's easy for the company to abolish the Apple AirPort project considering that it's not one of the core products. In its financial report, the project is lumped with the "other products" category, which earned for the company $11.1 billion in fiscal year 2016. While that may seem big, it just constitutes five percent of the total earnings.
Reps for the company did not comment on the news about the Apple AirPort project being abolished. But this is still in keeping with the Cupertino-based firm's policy of not talking about its internal decisions.
