Is Aquaman the Next DC Entertainment Superhero to Get a Movie Franchise?

Rumor has it DC Entertainment wants Aquaman to be the star of the next superhero movie franchise. After getting a cameo on HBO's Entourage as Vinny Chase's blockbuster role, the idea of Aquaman hitting the real silver screen seemed more like a joke.

But with the massive success of The Avengers and Iron Man, DC Entertainment is scouring the archives to find out who is going to be the new lead. In an attempt to merge the storylines of the Justice League, DC is planning on releasing an animated film which is believed to go straight to DVD. To rehabilitate the comics, writer Jeff Parker has been brought in to work on some new storylines.

In an interview with Variety, DC Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns says the amphibious superhero is definitely a top priority for the company. Though he does agree that Aquaman "became a bit of a joke" he still thinks there's mass appeal for the character.

"There is no doubt in my mind that this is one of the most well-known characters among super-heroes, and in popular culture," Johns said. "We are finding new areas in the ocean every day. It's as alien as going to outer space."

With the Batman/Superman crossover film in production, it could make sense to wheel out the beginning stages of a collaborative Justice League franchise.
