'Assassin's Creed' Movie News: Live Film Version Introduces New Twists, Two Protagonists

Popular video game "Assassin's Creed" is getting a live film version, as confirmed by game developer Ubisoft.

In previous years, the film industry has not been very kind to movies inspired by video games. Films like "Super Mario Bros," "Mortal Kombat," "Tekken" and "Street Fighter" have been poorly received by moviegoers and got mostly negative reviews from critics. Despite that, game developer Ubisoft not too long ago announced that one of its most popular game series, "Assassin's Creed," will get a live film version.

The upcoming action adventure film will be based on the "Assassin's Creed" video game franchise and will be directed by Justin Kurzel. Written by Michael Lesslie, Adam Cooper and Bill Collage, the film will star Michael Fassbender, Mariion Cotillard, Jeremy Irons, Brendan Gleeson, Charlotte Rampling and Michael K. Williams.

According to reports, the movie will draw inspiration from some of the elements of the video game but will introduce new twists. It will reportedly introduce two protagonists, Aguilar de Nerha and Callum Lynch, his descendant. Both characters will be played by "X-Men" actor Michael Fassbender.

In the story, Callum Lynch is being tracked down by the Abstergo Industries and will be forced to relive the memories of his ancestor, Aguilar de Nerha, through a device known as Animus.

The movie will be set in the same universe as the "Assassin's Creed" video game, and while it will be partly inspired by the game, it will feature an original story that will expand the mythology of the series.

Filming for the film started in late August, 2015, and ended in January, 2016.

"Assassin's Creed" hits theaters on Dec. 21, 2016 in the United States and France.
