'Assassin's Creed' Latest News & Update: Next Assassins Creed Title Features Scripted Stories

Ubisoft has always been committed to focusing on game worlds than on scripted narratives. With the next Assassin's Creed title, the company is launching its first project with a new direction.

According to chief creative officer Serge Hascoet, Ubisoft has an internal plan of designing every game as an "anecdote factory." With this approach, each player is given the tools to make their own fun, rather than the developers dictating to them the terms from on high.

"The game is becoming less important. What interests me is to make worlds that are interesting to me, even as a tourist," said Hascoet, speaking to Le Monde.

He added that it can now be up to the player to amuse himself, as long as the characters that he meets in those worlds are also interesting.

In as early as 2014, back when Far Cry 4 was still in development, Hascoet has been speaking of the company's "anecdote factory" plan.

Hascoet also said Ubisoft does not want players to go through stories created by someone. "We have games like that still, but I ask more and more that we let the player write their own story--that they set themselves a long-term goal, identify the opportunities that are open to them and choose not to follow a path that was decided for them," he explained.

According to him, their desire is to let the players express themselves in a sufficiently interesting way, so they may want to share it with other players, too.

The next Assassin's Creed game is set for release in 2017.
