The Bachelorette Season 9 Premiere Has Its Share of Outrageous Contestants. Bachelorette Desiree Hartsock Sends One Home Early. Episode Review.
"The Bachelorette" Season 9 got off to the series' always-interesting start last night, as star Desiree Hartsock meets her 25 suitors for the first time. Before it was time to meet and greet the men, Desiree was given a tour of the mansion in Malibu in which she'll be staying for the show. The luxury of the house, in combination with a neon blue Bentley she'll be driving. She got emotional after this, reflecting on her humble roots and where she had come from.
Anxiously, Desiree then left to meet her potential mates for the first time. After meeting Drew, a 27-year-old digital marketing analyst, Desiree seemed to be at ease. the interaction went well and it seemed like she would get a great crop of guys to choose from. This would not be the case.
Brooks forgot to introduce himself; Jonathan oddly presented her with an opportunity to immediately join him in the fantasy suite (yes, that fantasy suite); and Diogo failed to impress her by showing up in a suit of armor.
The second limo full of men brought more promise, or at least fewer costumes, for Desiree. The highlight of this limo was meeting Ben and his son Brody, who both instantly stole Desiree's heart. Having only encountered him for a few minutes, Desiree gives him a rose, stating that he's "husband material." Whoa. A little fast for the first date. But then again, this is a TV dating show. Ah, I digress.
After a ceremonial toast, it was time for Desiree to begin her one-on-ones with her potential suitors. Twenty-six-year-old magician and terrible-suit-wearer Nick R. steals the show (and the star) by making "Desiree" disappear. Spoiler alert: He didn't last long.
This time is cut short when another man comes to "steal her away." That time is cut short. And the next. And the next. You see where this is going. But, after a fun game of soccer with 31-year-old former pro soccer player Juan Pablo that gets the whole gang involved, Desiree's mood dramatically shifts when Jonathan executes the most awkward 5 minutes of Bachelorette TV history (which is really saying something) asks her yet again if she would like to join him in the fantasy suite.
This went about as well as you would imagine and Desiree sends him packing in the first of 5 eliminations for the evening. She would also send home, magician and bad-suit-wearer Nick R., 34-year-old creepy doctor Larry (who couldn't decide whether he wanted his glasses on or off), and "knight in shining armor" Diogo are empty-handed.
Now that the formalities have run their course, Desiree will get to know her potential suitors on a more awkw... I mean, intimate level when "The Bachelorette" continues next Monday at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
