Bear Mauls Man in Alaska, Man Gives BBQ Meat From His Church Picnic to a Bear Who Attacks in Response

Black bear mauled a man at an Alaskan campground, but the Department of Fish and Game in Alaska says that they bear will not be a threat to others.

Ken Marsh, a spokesman for the Alaska Department of Fish and Game was quoted in saying that the bear was "pretty much goaded" into the attack, which took place this past Saturday, close to the Eklutna Lake Campground near Anchorage. The bear apparently attacked after the man fed it barbecue from a church cookout.

There could be a charge of illegally feeding wildlife for the man, who had been drinking. He apparently went for a bike ride, came across the bear, and threw it a piece of meat. When he offered the bear another piece, it came for him.

Rangers later found the man bloodied and at his campground, tending to his own wounds. Marsh said that he "wasn't terribly coherent. He was unsure of where the attack actually happened."

The man's injuries were treated at the hospital in Anchorage and his named was not released. While the authorities are still parsing through this story, they are reiterating that unauthorized feeding of animals is forbidden.
