'Black Panther' Latest News: 'The Walking Dead' Star Danai Guirira Joins 'Black Panther' Cast
Actress Danai Guirira has been cast in Marvel Studios' upcoming film, "Black Panther."
The African actress is best known for her role as Michonne in "The Walking Dead." Talking about how she got the role in "Black Panther," Guirira revealed that it was not because of her role in the AMC series.
"The director Ryan Coogler had never watched 'The Walking Dead.' He'd watched me in something completely different. It's quite amazing to hear, but these are African women roles. He'd watched me in an independent film, 'Mother of George.' He's never seen 'The Walking Dead,'" she told ComicBook.com.
The actress will play Okoye in the upcoming film, who is described as the leader of the Dora Milaje. In "Black Panther," the Dora Milaje is a group of highly skilled women whose role is to protect the king of Wakanda. They also serve as the personal bodyguards of the Black Panther.
While Guirira's roles in "The Walking Dead" and in the upcoming Marvel film are both women who are great in dealing with enemies, the actress said the two are completely different, although her role as Michonne in "The Walking Dead" has helped her a lot in training for her role as Okoye.
According to reports, Okoye will be a more disciplined fighter compared with Michonne.
"Black Panther" is expected to bring viewers to the highly secluded Wakanda and will also star Lupita Nyong'o, Forest Whitaker, Winston Duke and Michael Jordan. It is scheduled to hit theaters on February 16, 2018.
