Blue Moon August 2012: Live Stream, Witness Rare Event Friday

Sky watchers around the world will have a chance to witness a fairly rare celestrial event - a "blue moon" today, Friday August 31, 2012. Live streaming is available as well.

What exactly is a "blue moon?" Contrary to its title, it doesn't refer to the moon's color, but its rarity. A "blue moon" occurs when a second full moon appears in the same calendar month. Onlookers should take a good look at it because it won't occur again until July 2015. Typically, "blue moons" only happen every 2.7 years.

Although it doesn't differ much from the full moon that is usually seen once a month, this event has historic significance.

The Sloosh Space-Camera, a web based entity, will display the rare sight for everyone to see. On "Blue Moon Friday," Slooth will hold a special broadcast, beginning at 6:00 p.m. EST (2200 GMT) that will display live views of the moon from multiple telescopes around the world. Along with the breath-taking views, Slooth will honor the historic figure, Neil Armstrong.

Armstrong was the first man to walk on the moon. The pioneer passed away this past Saturday at the age of 82 years-old due to complications from heart surgery. A portion of the Sloosh broadcast will honor his legacy.

Acclaimed documentary maker Duncan Copp, creator of "In the Shadow of the Moon" will join astronomer and Sloosh editor, Bob Beman in giving insight on Armstrong's life as well as little known facts about the NASA's Apollo moon project.

There's no excuse to wait another 3 years to catch this rare event because it can also be viewed on Laptops, IOS, and Android mobile devices via live streaming.  Click here to view the live stream.
