Brandon Heath Talks New Album ‘No Turning Back’; Singer Recalls Rejection After Becoming a Christian [INTERVIEW]
Multi-Award-winning singer Brandon Heath caught up with BREATHEcast to chat about his upcoming album No Turning Back. He talked about his childhood, the journey to forgiveness, and sharing Christ even if people reject you.
His sixth studio album is slated to release Feb. 10, and centers in what he calls the most memorable moment he has had in his early life. It is about the moment he gave his life to the Lord as a teenager at a Young Life camp and he was forever changed.
"1995 is the year I accepted Him [Jesus] into my life. It was through an organization called Young Life and Young Life is an outreach to High School kids," he explained, "I was in a pretty interesting time in my life; a teenager which is always kind of a little awkward for everybody, and it was for me. That's kind of when you are figuring out who you are and what you believe and what your own convictions are aside from your parents."
Heath said deciding to accept Jesus into his life at that camp came at very important time in his life. "I had some hard feeling towards one of my parents and we weren't getting along very well," he said, "It's not like you immediately feel different but for me I can see now that I was immediately different. They call it a mountain top experience and although you are a new creation God doesn't promise an easy life and easy road. My life didn't get easier, well in some ways it did get easier, because I had forgiveness, but it doesn't mean that life's going to stop throwing you curve balls."
Heath said since he has made a decision to follow God it has not been a walk in the park. "Being a believer also calls for tribulation and for some people to kind of turn their backs on you because you don't fit in with them anymore," the crooner stated, "At the end of times ultimately we don't have to deal with tribulation but for now we kind of do."
The Nashville native said people will not always necessarily believe what you believe "but it's an honor to carry the banner of forgiveness and tell people about God's son because He is ultimately what changed everything for us."
"For me I really found it an honor to do that," Heath declared, "Life can really get stagnant if we allow it to and I think that's when we really got to ask God to show us the next step in our path."
Heath, aware of the fact that many can become inactive on their journey with the Lord, says it is important that people remember the first time they gave their life to God. Recalling the conversion that made them realize they would not turn back to the world.
"I haven't found my life to be boring at all since I've become a believer but there are times in my faith where it does feel a little stagnant and I just got to remember where I've come from and then you realize you're on the most amazing journey of your entire life," he continued.
For the recording of his sixth studio album Heath returned to the camp where he had his transformation. "This next year will be 20 years since I made that decision," He said, "I wanted to convey what my journey has been and what it was like back then because I think a lot of us never go back to see how faithful God has been."
"He's been with me the whole time and the other thing is he's been paying attention to things that would really make me feel loved," he sustained, "God has given me everything I've ever needed. I've written songs about that before and I feel like God has supplied me with my needs."
Heath acknowledged that although people make the decision to follow Jesus it is a constant effort. "What actually happens when you accept Jesus into your life as far as He's [God is] concerned there's no turning back. You only have to make that decision once," he added, " For us sometimes it does require, in our own mind and spirit, to make that commitment almost daily, but for him it only takes once."
The singer/songwriter maintains that what keeps him going forward is committing to, "no turning back."
Joining Heath for the first time as a producer on No Turning Back is popular musician Ed Cash. Cash's music has played a significant role in Heath's early spiritual development and continues to today.
"I love Ed. He was the musician at the camp at 1995 when I was there," Heath explained stating that oddly enough he got two CD's of Cash signed while he was at camp and from that moment on always wanted to work with him.
Heath added, "because of what the record was about I thought that Ed could really bring it to life because he was there for me."
