Candace Cameron Bure Speaks Out About Her Past Struggles with Bulimia Post Full House
Candace Cameron Bure, aka DJ Tanner from hit 90s sitcom Full House, recently spoke out about her battles with the eating disorder bulimia as she tried to maintain a sense of normal after getting married.
"The emotional struggle I had in dealing with just a totally new life. That really was the time of identifying with being an actress and that being my whole life, and then now being someone's wife and moving to a new city, a new country even," she revealed to OMG Insider.
At the time, Bure was just 20-years-old and newly married to hockey star Valerie Bure. She moved from the States to Montreal, Canada to be by her husband as he played. Full House had also just ended after nearly 10 years on the air.
"I turned to food for comfort and had to find a different source, because clearly it wasn't a healthy way to deal with things," she continued. "So that's really when my faith was kicked up a notch and sought comfort in my relationship with God -- and not with food."
She told OMG that her time on Full House shielded her from things like eating disorders and body image because the producers of the show along with her family kept the focus away from things like that, and instead provided an environment of safety. Bure had an episode where her character had to deal with a "crash diet," and that was handled very well as she was walked through it.
In a recent interview with the Christian Post, Bure shared what working on the hit television show taught her about family.
"'Full House' taught me that you always have to hug each other within 30 minutes. So we do a lot of hugging in our family. Lots of great takeaways from that show, but even more so with my real family."
Family and faith are extremely important to everything she does in her life, especially in the roles she chooses to work on.
"I've passed on many roles and auditions just walking through the door because of content and knowing where I draw my lines and boundaries. I'm doing the very things I want to be doing," she shared. "Hallmark and the UP Network are the places I wants to be."
Part of her strive for family friendliness and moral values filled projects is her relationship with Jesus, and being a Christian in a notoriously unstable work environment for someone of faith.
"Being a Christian affects every aspect of my life. It plays a part in all the roles and projects I choose to be a part of. I want to honor Christ in all that I do, and that's why it's important to stay in the family friendly role of television and movies," said Bure.
Candace Cameron Bure can currently be seen on "Let It Snow," showing on the Hallmark Channel and encore showings of K-Love Music City Christmas. Her book, Balancing It All, can be purchased wherever books are sold.
