Carrie Underwood Responds to Twitter Backlash Over Iconic "Sound of Music" Role
When Carrie Underwood appeared on The Today Show during this year's Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade, she could hardly hold back how excited she is to be involved in this December's Sound of Music remake.
"We still have a week to prepare but it's coming along really, really wonderfully," she told Matt Lauer and Savannah Guthrie. "Just such a great cast, so much talent. I'm blessed for sure."
Underwood is eager to take on the role but understands the weight its carried over the last half-century.
"It's a big legacy and it's so important to so many people. Such a beautiful story, such beautiful music," she said. "We just want to do it justice."
Not everyone is as excited for Underwood to take on the iconic role. The former American Idol winner says she's received "hate tweets" and backlash on the Internet. However, the "Blown Away" singer recently told Entertainment Weekly that she's well aware no one can ever replace original cast member Julie Andrews.
"I know I'm not Julie. Nobody is and I would never pretend that I was... I know my place."
In an interview with Larry King, Andrews praised the young country singer for taking on the role.
"I think she's great," said Andrews, according to Us Weekly. "It's going to be the original show, I believe, and I think after 40 or 50 years, it's probably time somebody else had a crack at it."
The Sound of Music remake is scheduled to air live December 5 on NBC.
