Mandisa's American Idol Experience Discouraged Her From Speaking About Faith; Feels Show's Added 'Spiritual Advisors' is Encouraging (VIDEO)

American Idol alum turned Grammy Award winning gospel singer Mandisa, speaks on what she thinks of American Idol's new "spiritual advisors."

Idol can be extremely stressful as contestants ranging from the ages 15 to 28 years old all compete for the top spot. So overseer of American Idol David Hill thought that since a number of singers grew up in faith-based environments and are now thrown into a completely new environment they could use a "spiritual advisor."

"I thought to myself, 'Wow, it must be really tough to go to this intense competition - and this show does change lives - and if you're used to being in a church-based organization, that would be a huge adjustment," Hill told USA TODAY Sports. "Especially for kids who are 16, 17, 18 years old and away from home for the first time."

He appointed Billy Mauldin, president and CEO of the Motor Racing Outreach ministry that's helped NASCAR drivers for years. "I couldn't think of anyone better to advise these kids than Billy," Hill said because the intense competitiveness of the competition was something Mauldin was use to.

Mandisa heard news of the new "spiritual" advisory role and took to Facebook to ask fans what they though of it because she was not sure how exactly Idol would go about it.

"AI has come a looong way since I was on it 8 years ago! I was discouraged to speak about my faith back then, so I was admittedly a bit suspicious of the term 'spiritual advisors'." Mandisa admits that she was nervous with the term because she was discouraged to talk about Jesus when she was in Idol.

"There was such a concern about alienating non-Christians that I was concerned that these advisors would lean more 'new age' than anything," she went on to say.

Fans sent the singer an article explaining who the new advisors were and they also posted several comments to confirmed Mauldin and his wife's Christianity.

After reading everything and she then shares her excitement over Idols decision to involve Mauldin. "I am so happy contestants will have strong believers present in what can be a very difficult, confusing & pinnacle time in their lives," she wrote, and then encourages fans to pray for the couple adding,

"I commit to praying for Billy & Julie Mauldin and the contestants over the next few months. You with me?"

Mauldin's Motor Racing Outreach's mission is to introduce people to a "personal faith in Christ, to growth in Christlikeness, and to active involvement in the church through relationships that provide care in times of stress, knowledge of God's word, and assistance in the development of leadership skills."
