Colombian Mother Allegedly Sold Virginity of 12 Daughters for $300
45-year old Colombian mother, Margarita de Jesus Zapata Moreno is allegedly sold the virginity of 12 of her daughters. According to RCN Radio, Moreno reportedly sought out men in a "favorable financial situation" and charged $300 per encounter. Moreno's 16-year old daughter, who is now pregnant as a result of the sexual abuse handed her mother over to the police earlier in the week, after she told the young teen to get an abortion.
According to the daughters' testimonies, their mother would start selling her children for sex once they reached the age of 12. Moreno would drug the daughters and force them to have sex with her clients.
"It hurts that a mother would do this," said police Chief Carlos Melendez. "The mother contacted highly solvent but depraved men so they could have sex with the minors when they turned 12."
Believed to be the father of the pregnant 16-year old's child, 51-year old Tito Cornelio Daza has also been arrested for allegedly sexually abusing a minor under 14 and enforcement of prostituion. Daza could face us to 25 years in jail. He's currently detained at Modelo prison while Moreno is being held at El Buen Pastro.
The 9-year old girls and 11-year old boy who were not forced into prostitution have already been taken by social services while the case if fully investigated.
Unfortunately, sexually abused minors are not uncommon to Colombia. In 2013 alone, there have been 11,333 reports of sexually abused minors and the year isn't over yet. A lack of government investigation is the most direct correlation according to Amnesty International.
"By failing to investigate effectively sexual violence against women, the Colombian authorities are sending a dangerous message to perpetrators that they can continue to rape and sexually abuse without fear of the consequences."
