Corey Booker Defeats Steve Lonegan in Special U.S. Senate Election In New Jersey [MORE DETAILS INSIDE]
It's been a long time coming for Newark, NJ Mayor Corey Booker. He will soon become New Jersey's first African American Senator.
Yesterday he won the Special U.S. Senate Election held in New Jersey against Steve Lonegan. The previous Senator was Sen. Frank Lautenberg, who dies in office this past June.
The Associated Press said, "The Newark mayor takes to Washington a national profile - boosted by a strong social media presence, frequent television appearances and his status as a surrogate for Barack Obama during the president's 2012 re-election campaign - just as the federal government begins functioning again after a 16-day shutdown."
Booker is a supporter of gay marriage and is for the improvement of schools throughout the United States and has the desire to make the Senate more available to all of us.
During his victory speech Booker said he's going to Washington, "to take back that sense of pride. Not to play shallow politics that's used to attack and divide but to engage in the kind of hard, humble service that reaches out to others."
He also said,
"If you voted for me, I will make you proud. If you didn't vote for me I will work every single day to earn your trust."
After Booker steps down Newark City Council plans to appoint an interim mayor in his place. Booker's expected to be sworn in as a senator by the end of the month.
