Here's the official synopsis for Episode 1 "The Inspiration" released by CBS:

Season 9 begins with the BAU searching for a methodical killer in Arizona. Meanwhile, the team speculate that Hotch wants to be the new unit chief.

According to Criminal Minds showrunner, Erica Messer, Season9 can be described in one word: backstories.

"That's our focus this year," Messer tells TVGuide.com. "We're telling backstories and origin stories. We want to give everybody some insight into our heroes because we give insight to the unsubs every week. We're going to hit 200 [episodes] and it feels like, 'Let's tell the audience things they never knew before.'"

Cast veteran A.J. Cook who plays Agent J.J. Jareau sat down with BFTV to dish a few details about the first few episodes of Season 1.

"We're coming back strong," she explained. "We're pretty much picking up where we left off. We're still recovering from the death of [Erin] Strauss and Hotch is acting as section chief in her place until they find out who the new chief is going to be. We have Camryn Manheim guest starring in the first two episodes. It's a two-parter. She plays the mother of an Unsub, and she's very protective. It's an interesting storyline there."
