Sacrifice like Jesus
A Spanish man took up a cross to bring attention to a dispute between Madrid and London over a British outpost on the island of Gibraltar.
Believer Justo Marquez carried a giant wooden cross on his back for four days to ask for God's help in ending the disagreement.
Marquez ended his journey when he crossed an airplane runway that serves as the border between Gibraltar and Spain. The cross -- which weighs over 20 pounds and stands approximately over nine feet tall and is over six feet wide, was outfitted with a set of wheels at its base. The cross was carried on Marquez's shoulder.
He wore a white sheet as a tunic and carried a sign that read, "No more hunger, no more war, peace on Earth." He said he plans to pray and fast in Gibraltar for 24 hours before returning to Spain.
Marquez began his trek to Gibraltar from the Spanish port city of Malaga located about 85 miles away with just a baguette and a bottle of water in his rucksack.
The 50 year-old, unemployed man stayed with supporters along the way who had heard about his protest in the media.
Marquez is a father of three whose wife works in a fruit warehouse. He said he plans to return to his hometown of Nerja by bus. And if the bus won't allow his cross onboard, he said he'd just leave it in Gibraltar.
Spain disputes Britain's three centuries of sovereignty over Gibraltar, a territory on the southern tip of Spain that measures just 2.6 square miles and is home to about 30,000 people.
Spain ceded Gibraltar to Britain in perpetuity in 1713 but has long argued that it should be returned to Spanish control. London says it will not do so because the Gibraltarians are staunchly pro-British.
