Fans who cannot wait for the next season of "Doctor Who" are in for a big treat, as the Doctor is back with a brand new Christmas Special.

This week, a sneak peek at this year's Christmas Special, titled "The Return of Doctor Mysterio," shows the twelfth doctor teaming up with an investigative journalist and a comic book superhero as he tries to save New York City from a deadly alien threat. The video also confirms that the investigative journalist and the superhero will be played by Charity Wakefield and Justin Chatwin, respectively.

"I've always loved superheroes and this Christmas, 'Doctor Who' dives into that world," said "Doctor Who" showrunner Steven Moffat in an official press release.

"My favorite superhero is Clark Kent. Not Superman, Clark Kent," he added.

In a separate statement, Justin Chatwin said, "Working with the amazing people at 'Doctor Who' has been one of the most fun and rewarding projects I've ever had the pleasure of being involved with."

Aside from Wakefield and Chatwin, the hour-long special will also feature Logan Hoffman, Matt Lucas, Aleksander Jovanovic and Adetomiwa Edun.

Written by Moffat himself, the "Doctor Who" Christmas Special 2016 is set to air on BBC America on Christmas day.

Meanwhile, the next season of "Doctor Who" will premiere in April 2017. According to reports, theater actress Pearl Mackie will join its cast as the newest companion of the Doctor, following Jenna Coleman's exit last year. Her character is named Bill, and is described as "cool, strong, sharp a little bit vulnerable with a bit of geekiness thrown in."
