Drake's Degrassi Roots Return in SNL Promo Video as Rapper Channels Jimmy Brooks (VIDEO)
Drake goes back to his Degrassi roots in his new Saturday Night Live promo for Saturday's show.
In the video promos, Drake is seen sitting next to Bobby Moynihan and Jay Pharoah. Drake listened to Pharoah's views on duck belly buttons and Moynihan's "cool cat tracks." In addition, the three men discussed "dropping beats." Drake reprises his role as Jimmy Brooks from the popular teen series Degrassi in a monologue in the video.
Saturday there will be a new cast member on the show. Sasheer Zamata was added to the troupe during the show's winter break. Zamata will be the first African-American woman to be part of the show since Maya Rudolph exited the series in 2007.
The mid-season acquisition hails from the criticism that SNL has suffered due to the fact there were not any African American female regulars on the show, even after six new cast members were added to the cast for season 39. The subject matter was mocked by SNL itself in a recent episode that was hosted by black actress Kerry Washington.
When the Scandal star guest hosted the SNL episode, Washington pretended to be frustrated when she was requested to imitate First Lady Michelle Obama, billionaire talk show host Oprah Winfrey, and singer Beyonce in the same sketch.
Zamata is not the only person added to the long running series. Saturday Night Live also employed two new writers, Leslie Jones and LaKendra Tookes. The new writing duo were discovered during the recent SNL auditions in Los Angeles and New York when SNL was searching for a new cast member.
Actor and rapper Drake will function as both the guest host and musical guest when Sasheer Zamata is expected to make her first appearance on the next live SNL broadcast on January 18.
