The Lyons are set to engage in a battle in "Empire" season 3, and it looks like they are in for the tough times ahead.

The episodes in the new season of "Empire" offer some payoff for the long standing storylines of the series, including the events that piqued the interest of viewers in the season 2 finale. Based on the promo video for the new season, it looks like viewers will finally know what Lucious has been hiding about his past.

There is a chance that in the upcoming season, viewers will witness a bit of romantic drama between Lucious and Cookie as they both deal with the presence of a politician who tries to dominate Empire Entertainment. While the politician seems to have some sort of an interest in Cookie, Cookie will take advantage of his liking to make Lucious jealous.

The latest promo for the new season highlights the drama between Lucious and Cookie, and it looks like Fox is not yet ready to focus on the larger drama of the season, especially the huge cliffhanger left by season 2 involving Anika and Rhonda.

The season 2 finale saw Anika and Rhonda get into a rooftop brawl after the latter discovered that the former pushed her down the stairs and caused the death of her unborn child. According to executive producer Ilene Chaiken, whoever fell from the rooftop will no longer return for season 3.

"We love both of these characters and both of these actresses---and it's hard to think about losing either one of them," she said.

"It's in the hands of the gods, and whoever survives is going to have quite story," she added.

"Empire" season 3 premieres on September 21, 9:00 P.M. on Fox.
