Family Force 5 Guitarist Says Best Memory is Touring with MercyMe & Crowder and Then Playing a Show with Iron Maiden [INTERVIEW 3]

Family Force 5

Family Force 5 guitarist Derek Mount (Chap Stique), spoke to BREATHEcast about being a light to diverse audiences, their new Christmas track, and their ability to not be "pigeonholed" into the Christian music genre.

FF5 will be doing the Winter Jam Tour the next few months and then follow it up on the Vans Warped Tour. The two tours are completely different with the first being totally Christian based and the second welcoming all bands with a secular audience.

Mount said both the tours are an amazing opportunity but they will not be doing anything different over the shows that they would not normally do.

"Family Force 5 doesn't really like to cater our shows to be changed or watered down for an audience. We just go for it and people love when a band is authentic," Mount said, "I think you can tell when someone is phoning it in or just being themselves. There's something fun about the recklessness of just going for it. "

The guitarist went on to explain how the band had their humble beginnings playing bars before they were even accepted into churches. Now, they are just grateful for the ability to play anywhere and leave an impact.

"There's a big heart to step outside of the walls of church and reach an audience that a lot of faith based bands don't reach." He then added that some of his fondest memories are getting off a tour with MercyMe and David Crowder and then flying out to London to play a show with Iron Maiden, Motley Crue, and Rammstein.

"People are people, and we all struggle with similar things, and we all like to smile and laugh about the same things and have a good time," said Chap Stique. FF5 is going to love the different audiences the same regardless of who they are, and that in itself is a testament.

"It's a different approach" he admitted, "It allows for genuine approach for spreading the love of God."

Mount said a lot of the audience may have never stepped foot in church and now they have that opportunity to get a little bit of the message.

People have asked them "'Why would you guys be seen with this band?' 'Why this venue?' We love that. Every time we get a chance to have a conversation with someone, it usually is an amazing experience."

Chap Stique also briefly spoke about the band's new Christmas single "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" and what it takes to stand out.

"Be creative and do something different," he said. There are so many different versions of Christmas songs that the real challenge is to be unique with it he said. They do not generally do covers but they jam around on Muse, Rage Against the Machine, and funk jams in practice.

Lastly, Mount concluded, "We love when people hang out with us online...and get to know them." He then encouraged people to take to social media to connect with them and be entertained. "We can't wait to get on these tours and to make new music."
