Family Force 5's Chap Stique Reveals Band Asked 'Are We Done?' After Soul Glow Activatur Stepped Down [INTERVIEW 1]
Family Force 5 guitarist Derek 'Chap Stique' Mount chatted with BREATHEcast about the band's new album Time Stands Still, getting a new lead singer, and contemplating if the band was over or not.
Chap Stique said so far reviews from the fans have been great. "It's been super encouraging for us," he said as the band often contemplated, "'I don't know if the fans are going to respond well.'"
He admitted it is very common to get attached to a singer especially, and knows exactly the devastation some music listeners feel when a singer steps down. Mount was a huge fan of Van Halen when it was led by lead singer Sammy Hagar, and was upset when he left the band.
"They [fans] received so wonderfully and have been embracing the change and loving it." He explained that a fan who has seen the band over 50 times said the first show with the new lineup was his "favorite" one yet.
The whole scenario was tough because former lead singer, Soul Glow Activatur has two siblings in FF5, Fatty and Crouton, and they had been playing together for nearly 20 years. The decision was to have Crouton come out from behind the drumset and become the lead singer. This transition was easier for the fans because at least the face was familiar.
"It was a bit of a scary moment," revealed Chap Stique, "It was something we had to all consider, 'Are we done, is there another chapter of this thing?'"
Family Force 5 decided there was still a lot of life left in the band, and things they needed to do. The remaining four kind of had the idea that Crouton or Fatty would sing and then they would have to replace those instruments and "juggled names around." They sought counsel and came up with the decision based on many meetings and talks. As Crouton became the lead singer, they brought in Hollywood to become the drummer.
Mount said Soul Glow is now having a great time with his wife and kids, which is part of the reason he stepped down. None of the other members of the band have kids except him, so when they get in his shoes in the future maybe things might change.
With Crouton at the helm, the album has somewhat of a different feel to it because of the lead singer switch. However, the sound is still distinctly theirs and certainly distinctly unique.
"They [fans] are enjoying the variety of it, like 'Raised by Wolves' and 'Sweep the Leg' and 'Everybody Lose Your Mind'..." the guitarist said. "A lot of dance moments on the record...It goes very well with Crouton's voice."
Having a new vocalist also let them shoot out into different sounding songs as well, as they could test out the vocals of Crouton, which was something that let them get very creative. "He has the little R&B upbringing and he's really good at those falsetto moments," shared Mount.

Family Force 5's Time Stands Still has spawned the No. 1 hit single "Let it be Love" as well as the huge song "BRZK" featuring Christian rapper KB.
The next few months hold a tremendous amount of touring for the five-piece as they will be playing Winter Jam followed by the Vans Warped tour.
