Jameis Winston of the Florida State Seminoles Says the BCS Championship was 'Nobody but God'
Florida State Seminoles quarterback Jameis Winston led his team to a miraculous and 'divine' final drive in the BCS championship game Monday night.
Trailing 31-27 to the Auburn Tigers, Winston had steered the Seminoles offense down the field with the team (14-0) in crunch time. The Heisman Trophy winner ended the drive with a two yard touchdown pass to Kelvin Benjamin with 13 seconds remaining, as No. 1-ranked Florida State defeated No. 2 Auburn 34-31 to win the Bowl Championship Series title at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif.
Auburn advanced to the championship game because of improbable last-minute wins, but Monday night was Florida State's time.
"Those men looked me in my eye and said, 'We got this, Jameis,'" said Winston to reporters after the game adding. "I said, 'Are you strong?' They said, 'I'm strong if you're strong.' I said, 'We're strong then.'"
Auburn (12-2) was the underdog, but then it outscored Florida State in the first half, leading at one time by 18. Winston's biggest mistake of the night was a first-half fumble led to a 21-3 Auburn lead.
However, the Florida offense started to penetrate Auburn's defense when Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher's team went for a fake punt late in the first half, setting up a touchdown to cut the first-half deficit to 21-10.
Florida State controlled the second half on defense up until the final five minutes. Then, the lead switched three times. Afterwards the Seminoles ran a kickoff back for a touchdown to take the lead. Auburn Tigers quarterback Nick Marshall led his team on offense along with running back Tre Mason, a Heisman finalist, giving Auburn a brief 31-27 lead with 1:19 left until Winston's rallied the Seminoles to come behind victory.
"That's what you're judged by. I'm pretty sure I got more respect from my teammates and the people around me on that last drive than I got the whole year," said Winston to reporters as he was announced as the Rose Bowl MVP.
Winston was previously accused of rape until Florida State attorney Meggs revealed that the evidence could not show that Winston's 2012 incident was not consensual.
"I'm so blessed," said Winston to reporters regarding Coach Fisher's 8-year-old son Ethan who is battling an uncommon blood illness that is incurable, "All the stuff that he handled with Ethan, and he come out here and coach us? It touched me, and it's nobody but God."
