Forest Whitaker, Angela Basset, & Jennifer Hudson Star in "Black Nativity" Official Movie Trailer Released
Forest Whitaker will be taking on another big role as he will star in the adaption piece Black Nativity by Harlem Renaissance poet Langston Hughes. The musical Off-Broadway production originally titled "Wasn't It a Mighty Day," was a huge hit in 1961 and is still performed on stage this very day. Fox Searchlight pictures will be bringing it to Theaters, re-telling the story of the birth of Jesus Christ from the Book of Luke with an all-black A-list cast.
Angela Basset, Jennifer Hudson, Mary J. Blige, Tyrese, and Nasir Jones are some of the leading stars in the film alongside Forest Whitaker who will play the role of a strict reverend.
The Holiday based musical drama centers around a Baltimore teen named Langston (Jacob Latimore) who is sent to New York City by his mother (Jennifer Hudson) to spend the Christmas holiday with his long distance relatives, Reverend Cornell (Forest Whitaker) and Aretha Cobbs (Angela Basset). Once Langston realizes Reverend Cornell's has a low tolerance for nonsense and severe rules, Langston attempts to make his way back home to Baltimore in time to spend the Holiday with his mother.
A description of the film says, "Langston embarks on a surprising and inspirational journey and along with new friends, and a little divine intervention, he discovers the true meaning of faith, healing, and family."
Black Nativity was written and directed by Kasi Lemmons who spoke about the film with USA Today saying, "I was a huge fan of musicals as a kid. The 'Fantasticks was one of my favorites. And 'Black Nativity' spoke to my childhood, with 'Jesus Christ Superstar' and 'Godspell.' This is my 'Godspell.'"
