Google Photos News Update: New App Converts Printed Pics To High-Quality Digital Copies

A new app for Google Photos should be welcome news for those who have printed pics just lying around.

According to the report from TechCrunch, the PhotoScan app allows people to simply convert their printed photos into high-quality digital copies in a snap.

David Lieb, Google Photos product lead, said this new Google Photos tool is really good news since it will prevent people from losing their printed copies permanently by storing them in perpetuity. He said the number of printed pics out there number to trillions.

"But it's very likely that you'll lose these photos permanently," he explained.

Without a scanner, people resort to taking photos of the photos-much like "Photoception"-which, although sound logically, only result to poor digital copies. What the PhotoScan app does is to take a photo of your printed copy and the software automatically reduces the glare, auto-correct the color and gradient, crop the photo before saving it.

Google Photos VP Anil SabharwalTold CNET said the app works great, especially since he himself can save photos taken from his home in Pakistan during the pre-war and post-war period. There were photos of his father when he was still a kid and his grandparents at a forgotten era.

"He's got a watch that his dad used to wear, and 10 or 20 photos of their wedding and of him as a kid," he said. "I was capturing them in a way so I can share them with my kids."

This Google Photos app is already available for free download on both the iOS and Android phones, said the news report.
