Halo TV Series by Steven Speilberg will be Much More than 'FIller' for Xbox One Microsoft Says

The future Halo TV plan will not just be a media spinoff of the legendary gaming franchise, as Halo is the "most important entertainment IP that Microsoft owns," Microsoft corporate vice president Phil Spencer told OXM.

The Halo assignment, led up by well-known film director Steven Spielberg at Microsoft's Los Angeles production studio, was publicized in May to endorse Microsoft's Xbox TV Programming on Xbox One. However, both Spencer and Spielberg explained why the series will be more than just advertising.

"I can't use the word filler anywhere near Halo, it just won't work," Spencer said. "If we're going to do a television series with Halo, we're going to do it the right way, and we're going to do it because we think it really matters."

Spielberg is no stranger to legendary franchises as he has directed multiple film series' including Jaws, E.T., Jurassic Park, and Indiana Jones.

"The Halo universe is an amazing opportunity to be at that intersection where technology and myth-making meet to produce something really groundbreaking," said Spielberg to OXM regarding the new Halo development.

Spencer also referred to Forward Unto Dawn, the online series that led to the release of Halo 4 in 2012, as a fruitful effort at merging the franchise successfully into other forms of media. The upcoming Halo TV show could be just as effective. Microsoft just confirmed that the Xbox One Halo title will debut this year, according to Ign.

"I think there's a story in the Halo games that's noteworthy," said Spencer to OXM adding. "And that we can introduce more people to the IP by putting the franchise, stories, and characters in more accessible mediums than a first person shooter. That's a good thing for Halo, a good thing for the platform, and a good thing for the IP owners."
