Hurricane Season 2014 Latest Update News: Experts Say Property Owners Should Prepare For Second Half of Hurricane Season
Despite having a quiet year so far, Dennis Feltgen at the National Hurricane Center in Miami said the public should be prepared for the next three months.
"It doesn't matter what the seasonal outlook is. What matters is being prepared. We've got three months of hurricane season to go, and we're in the peak," said Feltgen
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the Atlantic basin is most active during September 9, 10 and 11 historically. This week also marks the middle of hurricane season, which runs from the start of June through the end of November.
Two systems are being monitored by meteorologists now. One is a disturbance off the East coast of Florida, while the other is low pressure system that spun off the West coast of Africa earlier this week.
In an average season, twelve storms are named, with half of those become hurricanes. So far, four tropical storms have been named this season, three of which became hurricanes.
Despite not having any big-name storms, this year's hurricane season has been active. This year is the first time in more than 20 years, where the first three named storms all became hurricanes. Also, the National Hurricane Center monitored as many as five tropical systems in a day in the past weeks.
Lee Mayfield, planning chief at Lee County Emergency Operations, advised residents and property owners in Southwest Florida to an eye on the tropics as the season ends, since the Gulf of Mexico is most active during late September and October.
"We have a lot of time to go in the season, and one of the biggest challenges we have this time of year is complacency. A lot of people say 'hurricane season is pretty much over.' That's definitely a problem with making sure the public is prepared," said Mayfield.
Experts advise people to be prepared even through the end of the hurricane season, since storms can form as late as Thanksgiving.
