Interview: New Duo, Love & The Outcome, Talks About Their Debut Album, The Experience of Living on the Road for 2 Years, Growing Up in Canada, Fall Tour Plans & More (VIDEO)

BreatheCast Interview w/ Love & the Outcome

For Chris and Jodi, Love & The Outcome is both a name and a literal life story. The duo sold their Winnipeg condo en route to a high-stakes musical road trip that has seen them criss-cross Canada, Liberia, the Philippines and China, winning over fans both emotionally and spiritually with their blend of effervescent pop. After signing to Word Records in 2012, they retreated to the mountains of Washington state to record their powerful debut, produced by Mosley along with Ben Glover (for King & Country) and David Garcia (TobyMac). Spring 2013 saw the two back on the road for the "Hundred More Years Tour" supporting Francesca Battistelli and The Afters over 27 dates. They are releasing their debut album on August 27th.

We appreciate them taking the time to talk with Breathecast and catch us up on everything.

BreatheCast: Is it true that you guys really sold your condo and made the road your home for a time?

"Yes, it's true! Condo life became dull compared to chasing down the dreams we felt God had put in our hearts - to write & perform music on the road. We didn't know we'd live without a fixed address for 2 years but that's how the journey unfolded.  Of course we had to keep Jodi's favorite Kitchen Aid mixer & I couldn't part with my vintage amplifiers!"

BreatheCast: How does it feel to finally be releasing your debut record on Word on August 27?

"Like a dream come true! Growing up in the middle of Canada with a vision of becoming like U2 or Amy Grant meant a lot of blood, sweat & tears; we played over 150 shows a year crossing the country in our Jetta hoping people would catch on to our music. That's not to say we didn't sense God's presence leading us, but it's a big country with a very spread out population! We built a team with our families & our manager & basically did everything ourselves for a couple years - to say that date nights took a back seat would be an understatement! We'd given ourselves completely to this life and would've continued in this manner but God opened an even bigger door for us through Word. They really understood our DNA & are just an incredible team and we are so thankful to be working together!"

BreatheCast: How would you describe your sound for people that haven't heard of you guys and what bands have influenced your sound?

"I'm a rocker & I've always loved the sound of British bands, so delirious? and U2 are high on my list; they wear their heart on their sleeves & their songs are anthems that are so inspiring to see & hear thousands of people sing along to.  Jodi grew up listening to Amy Grant and Sheryl Crow so it's not a big surprise where her pop sensibilities come from! She is so amazing at connecting with an audience & in turn connecting them with God."

BreatheCast: Tell us the story behind your single, "He Is With Us"?

"'He Is With Us' is our snapshot of the journey God has led us on over the last couple years, and it's an encouragement to remember that we can trust him through the hard times, always! We wrote it with our friend Seth Mosley and it kind of started with Jodi improvising the line 'Remember when...' over the bass line I play in the verses... we were trying to write something very direct, I think; my favorite line is, 'Though it might hurt now, we won't be ruined...'  When you go through something painful like losing a loved one, you realize God is working through the people who've supported you because everyone knows what that feels like."

BreatheCast: How was your recent tour with The Afters and Francesca Battistelli?

"It was an incredible experience touring with Francesca & the Afters... we were able to join one of the buses so we got the full effect of the behind-the-scenes American tour! It was such a great team & everyone worked really well together, so it was easy for us to fit in.

We love performing every night, so the fifteen minutes we had on stage were so much fun!  Jodi is my favorite singer & she's amazing at connecting with an audience & in turn connecting them with God.  We are constantly thinking of ideas of how to make our live show more engaging & these shows were so important for us because it gave us a glimpse of how far we can stretch the duo setup onstage."

BreatheCast: If you could collaborate with one Secular Artist and one Christian Artist, who would you choose?

"Great question! dc talk if they were still together- never say never! We've always been big fans of Jack White - such a creative personality & his studio is right down the street from us!"

BreatheCast: What was it like working with Ben Glover (for KING & COUNTRY) and David Garcia (TobyMac) on your new album?

"Ben & David worked as a team on our project & it made for a very creative combination... they can almost finish each other's sentences so the ideas flowed fast & furious when we were all in the same room together! Ben works from a more organic, lyric driven frame of mind while David is incredibly talented at production & putting the right musical elements together. An added bonus for me is that he kind of thinks like a bass player so we came up with some of my favorite parts together!

Songs like 'When We Love' and 'No Mistaking (It's You)' became these super-catchy, melodic anthems that we hope people will really enjoy!"

BreatheCast: Do you guys have a favorite scripture as a band or a truth that you guys use a lot? If not, what are some personal favorite verses of yours?

"Revelation 12:11 has become a real encouragement to us, in how it talks about overcoming our circumstances because of what Jesus did for us on the cross. But it doesn't stop there- we need to share our story, our testimony with others, and that's how we experience real freedom!"

BreatheCast: What are your touring plans for this Fall 2013?

"We are so excited and blessed to be able to join Newsong on their 'Swallow the Ocean' tour this fall, as well as their Christmas tour in December, so we'll be really busy. But we love that because performing live & connecting with people is our greatest joy, & the best way we know how to serve God's kingdom on Earth!"
