INTERVIEW: Sidewalk Prophets Share Story Behind Single 'Live Like That', Their College Experiences and Talk About Their New Devotional Book
The Sidewalk Prophets are a contemporary Christian band currently based out of Nashville, TN. They have had three Top 5 singles including "You Love Me Anyway" that went to No. 1 on the U.S. Christian charts. Their latest album Live Like That was released on March 27th, 2012.
We'd like to thank the Sidewalk Prophets for taking the time to speak with BreatheCast.
BreatheCast: Tell us the story behind your single, "Live Like That"?
SWP: "This song really speaks to all of those people in our lives who have shown us the love of Christ through their love and actions. People who have given so much of themselves in a Christ-like way that you can't help but stand back and say "I want to live like that"! It's our hope that Christ radiates through our lives and hopefully he can use us to inspire others to live life to it's fullest."
BreatheCast: You guys made a living mostly playing camps/conferences for years starting out, do you miss playing those or do you still get the opportunity?
SWP: "Camps were an awesome way for us to learn what is important. We got a real chance to connect with people and that is really where our love for playing music was born. We still get an opportunity every once in a while to play a camp but right now we're really feeling called to travel the country and facilitate events that kids and parents alike will enjoy."
BreatheCast: How did your time at Anderson University impact your music careers?
SWP: "Anderson has such a rich history of music. Spanning from the Gaithers, to Sandi Patty. The friendships we made during our time there along with the love and encouragement we got from everyone on campus, really enabled us to lay the foundation for what we get to do now. It's an honor to say that our band started in Anderson and we continue to be blown away by what God is doing through that establishment."
BreatheCast: What advice would you give to up and coming Christian bands
SWP: "Advice for bands. We could say a lot of things but here are 2 important things to think about.
-Don't Give Up: This is the top thing to remember. People will love you, people won't like you. You'll write good songs and you'll write bad songs. You'll have inspired seasons, and you'll have uninspired seasons. In the end if God has put the passion in your heart to be a band- then keep seeking him and he will keep refining your ministry and taking you to places you never imagined.
-Love People: People make being a band worth it! The stories you get to hear from people and the friendships you get to make are invaluable. If you are chasing fame or fortune you will find a very hollow existence. Somewhere in the stories of people you find this unexplainable fuel that can turn your attitude around, and change your perspective. Write great songs, work hard and love people!"
BreatheCast: Tell us about your 'Live Like That' devotional series?
SWP: "Every song on our albums are inspired directly from scripture. We wanted people to understand that we just don't write songs. It's our intention to utilize the scriptures in such a way that it brings a refreshing perspective to them. This doesn't mean we're bringing extra value to the scriptures - it just means that we want to try to give people every way possible to connect with them. A lot of times that is through stories and we felt the the LLT Devo Series might encourage someone. Check em out if you get a chance. www.youtube.com/sidewalkprophets"
BreatheCast: If you could collaborate with one Secular Artist and one Christian Artist, who would you choose?
SWP: "We would probably collaborate with Counting Crows (secular). They were our favorite band in college. If we could collaborate with one Christian artist it would probably be Jars of Clay. We respect those guys so much!"
BreatheCast: Do you have a current scripture or quote that has been speaking to you?
SWP: "Hebrews 12 1-3"
BreatheCast: What are your touring plans for this Fall 2013?
SWP: "We are touring with Matthew West and Jason Castro this Fall on the Into the Light tour. It's gonna be great. We played with those guys on Winter Jam earlier this year and struck up a true friendship with both. Jason has an amazing heart and a ridiculously sweet voice. Matthew is one of the greatest songwriters I've ever known. Put it all together, it's going to be a great Fall!"
