Interview: Todd Dulaney Shares About His Transition from Professional Baseball to Music Career and His New Album 'Pulling Me Through'

Todd Dulaney grew up a spectacular athlete and eventually played 5 years of professional baseball in the NY Mets system. Dulaney is a worshiper at heart, a songwriter and artist who truly loves God and eventually decided to switch career paths. He now leads the Praise & Worship at Living Word Christian Center in Forest Park, IL and released his latest album Pulling Me Through in March 2013.

We would like to thank Todd Dulaney for taking the time to share with BreatheCast about his music and ministry.

BreatheCast: What was it like living out your childhood dream of playing professional baseball?

TD: "Playing professional baseball was sureal. Walking into the clubhouse and seeing guys that you grew up watching on television was really mindblowing, and then actually competing for THEIR jobs was crazy!"

BreatheCast: Tell us how you decided to make that switch from baseball to singing worship?

TD: "One off-season I went to a church that was pastored by Smokie Norful, the moment I walked into the service I felt like it was catered to me.  Every word was MINE!  For the first time in my life, I had a new perspective and playing pro ball became a small priority. I kept attending this church and eventually singing on the praise team and when the next season came around I said "I dont wanna go back to spring training." Everyone thought that I was crazy but I knew my purpose was in service to God. The question I always hear is, "Why not do both"? My answer is,  because ive found freedom in singing and sharing the Gospel.. its all that I wanna do."

BreatheCast: You released your new album Pulling Me Through on March 26, 2013, how do you feel the record has been received?

TD: "I believe Pulling Me Through is a great start for me in ministry. I've heard great reports from people. (But I dont know if they'd tell me if they hated it :-)  but the songs have been received well all accross the US and I'm grateful."

BreatheCast: How would you describe your sound for people that haven't heard of you and what bands have influenced your sound?

TD: "I think the word that best decribes our sound is, Simple. I believe the simplicity of the sound allows for God to be the focus and for everything else to take a back seat to Him. Don't get me wrong, I love for the band and singers to hit HARD, but only hard enough that Christ remains the star. And I would say Rascal Flatts and Hillsong, have a huge impact on this ministry along with Israel Houghton."

BreatheCast: Tell us the story behind your song, "TE AMO"?

TD: "While I was playing baseball, for everyone who knows about that game, the majority of players are from Latin America. So I wanted to make sure that this ministry catered to some of my latino and hispanic brothers and sisters.  To this day I still stay in contact with alot of my friends from the islands and I wanted them to hear what God has done in my life through song."

BreatheCast: If you could collaborate with one Secular Artist and one Christian Artist, who would you choose?

TD: "The secular artist would be Rascal Flatts. And the Christian artist or movement would be Jesus Culture."

BreatheCast: Do you have a favorite scripture as a band or a truth that you use a lot? If not, what are some personal favorite verses of yours?

TD: "I believe the scripture that I love to use for our fasts is 2Chronicles 5:13-14. It talks about how a band back in the Bible days played until the glory of the Lord filled the temple and nothing else could go forth because God's presence had gotten soooo heavy. So it gives us a goal."
