Justin Bieber Charged with Assault In Canada; Singer Turns Himself in to Toronto Authorities
Justin Bieber was charged with assault while in Toronto, Canada yesterday, and turned himself in at a police station where he was surrounded by TV crews, news photographers, and his shouting adolescent supporters.
The charge comes a week after he was detained and charged for another incident in Florida - driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol.
Toronto police said that Justin Bieber was one of six people picked up by a limousine outside a nightclub in the early morning of December 30.
"While driving the group to a hotel, an altercation occurred between one of the passengers and the driver of the limousine," said Toronto police in a statement. "In the course of the altercation, a man struck the limousine driver on the back of the head several times. The driver stopped the limousine, exited the vehicle and called police. The man who struck him left the scene before police arrived."
After submitting himself to police yesterday, Bieber was charged with one count of assault and is slated to appear in court in Toronto March 10.
Howard Weitzman, the singer's attorney in California, stated his client was not guilty and that he anticipates the case to be treated as a summary offense, which is comparable of a misdemeanor in the United States.
Yesterday, a petition requesting Bieber's dismissal from the US reached 100,000 signatures.
The plea was filed on a White House website by a member of the public. President Barack Obama does not have the ability to order an individual's deportation, and it is uncertain whether the White House will reply to the petition.
Justin Bieber has had numerous run-ins with police over the past year.
In the early hours of last Thursday, he was detained in Miami Beach after a police officer pulled him over on suspicion of racing a hired yellow Lamborghini on a public street.
The singer was also indicted with resisting arrest and driving on an expired license. The young star was later freed on bail of $2,500.
Earlier this month, law enforcement searched Bieber's home after he allegedly threw eggs at his neighbor's house, causing thousands of dollars in losses.
The conclusion of that search is still uncertain but one of the singer's friends was arrested amid the search.
"for all those asking @JeremyBieber and @pattiemallette love their son. Stop passing judgement on a situation u dont understand. i ask people to be kind and hope for the best in people. not assume the worst. Thanks," wrote Bieber's manager Scooter Braun via Twitter last night in support of his client.
