Lee Daniels: The Butler is a film inspired by the true story of Eugene Allen, who served eight presidents during his life as a White House butler.

The film stars Forest Whitaker as Cecil Gaines and Oprah Winfrey as his wife Gloria Gaines. Written by Danny Strong and directed by Lee Daniels, the film was released this summer, August 16. The film was a box office hit, grossing over $129 million worldwide against a budget of $30 million.

Cecil Gaines grew up in the cotton fields of the south witnessing the abuse of his parents, Earl Gaines (David Banner) and Hattie Pearl (Mariah Carey) through the slave system. Throughout the movieCecil lives by the Jim Crow laws and fear, this forces him to be the "good negro".

Daniels follows Cecil from his slave childhood, civil rights movements, and to the election of America's first African American president.

Lee Daniels is known for production of the film Monsters Ball, and the directing of Precious, which starred Gabourey Sidibe and received six Academy Awards nominations, including best director.
