'Left Behind' Remake Receives Bad Reviews From Christians & Non-Believers Alike; Claiming 'It's a Soulless Christian Movie' [VIDEO]
The remake of 'Left Behind' hit theaters today and the film already has a bad reputation. Countless media sources including both Christian and secular publications completely bomb on the film, its acting, and cinematography.
'Left Behind' follows the epic story of a group of survivors after millions of people suddenly vanish and the world is spun into chaos with destruction in its wake. The story is supposed to be based on the prophesied events of the Rapture described by John in the book of Revelation.
Cloud Ten Pictures, who created the original trilogy of films, also did the remake and were hoping to bring the film to a more mainstream audience. Although they did succeed at getting a lot of press for the film with its "A-list" actors, including Nicolas Cage, after watching the film the media had some harsh things to say about 'Left Behind'.
The Christian Post, a well-known faith based publication showed no mercy when reviewing the film. Stating that the film had "Poor Dialogue, Abysmal Cinematography and Flat Performances."
"Looking back at its predecessors, 'Left Behind' failed to replicate the appeal of the Kirk Cameron-starred film series of the same name," the publication reported, "Moreover, 'Left Behind' is a far cry from Tim LaHaye and Jerry B. Jenkins' massively popular books on which the film is based."
Another complaint was that the faith-based movie did not provide enough information on what the biblical Rapture is. "In conclusion, where 'Left Behind' could have instructed believers and non-believers alike on the story of the rapture, the film disappointingly trips over cheap special effects and a painful script."
The apocalyptic thriller was directed by Vic Armstrong and written by Paul LaLonde and John Patus. The star-studded cast includes Cage, Chad Michael Murray playing the role of Buck Williams (Kirk Cameron in the original remake), television actress Lea Thompson, and actress Cassi Thomson, among many others.
Another Christian publication, New Release Tuesday shared a similar negative reaction to the film, with a headline that reads, "When Story is Left Behind."
"I am not sure if it was just the heavy-handed script, a lack of belief on the part of the performers, or perhaps a stab at intentional irony, but I found myself (a believer) relating less to the believers (who aren't seen again and come off quite angry) and more to the "unbelievers," the music publication noted.
The writer said that although a fan of the lead actor, his acting disappointed as well. "Cage is surprisingly, well, caged," the article admitted, "I'm a Christian too, but the movie doesn't really want to seem to work at convincing the unbelievers. Even veiled references to Biblical support for the ideas are just barely referenced and fail to really establish a convincing case."
When considering if perhaps the Christian media might be a bit harder on the film because of its 5 million dollar flashy budget and mainstream actors, it was a shock to see that the mainstream media shared a lot of the same complaints on the film.
Like The Christian post, The Daily Beast also concurred that the original 'Left Behind' was better than the remake. "Those hoping that this 'Left Behind' is a beefed-up, more sophisticatedly produced, and action-packed (perhaps better?) version of its original... will be sorely disappointed," they penned, adding that although they were not fond of the original "compared to 2014's 'Left Behind', it's an epic."
Like wise echoing that the academy award winning actor Cage did not do his best, The Daily Beast said, "But the true apocalypse of this new 'Left Behind'...is that it's a soulless Christian movie starring Nicolas Cage.
