Netflix will no longer renew "Marco Polo" for another season.

Recent reports confirm that the digital service has decided to cancel the Weinstein Co.-produced series after streaming for two seasons on Netflix.

"Marco Polo" first premiered in 2014 and told the story of the famous 13^th century merchant and explorer. With the recent confirmation of its cancellation, the series has become one of the original Netflix series to be cancelled by the streaming giant, joining "Bloodline," "Hemlock Grove" and "Lillyhammer."

The premiere season of the series attracted sizable viewership, but its sophomore season, which was released in July this year, was rather a flop.

Following the cancellation, Weinstein Co. expressed in an official statement its gratitude to Netflix and the people behind the series.

"We want to thank and are grateful to our partners on 'Marco Polo' from the actors, whose performances were enthralling and top-notch; to the committed producers...and their crew, who poured their hearts into the series," said Weinstein Co.

"Netflix has been incredible to give us the room to make a series with a cast true to every principle of diversity. It's a bold network that allows you to do that and support us in the way that Netflix did," said Weinstein Co. chairman Harvey Weinstein.

"Marco Polo" starred Lorenzo Richelmy as the titular Italian explorer Marco Polo, and Benedict Wong as Kublai Khan. The series was one of the most ambitious efforts of Netflix in the history of its original series, with its premiere season reportedly costing $90 million.
