Marvin Gaye III Sues Robin Thicke Over "Blurred Lines" and "Love After War" Copyright Infringement
Marvin Gaye's oldest son Marvin Gaye III has filed a separate copyright infringement lawsuit against Robin Thicke for Thicke's songs "Blurred Lines" and "Love After War." The legal battle between Gaye's family and Thicke have been going on for a while, but this new wrinkle will complicate how damages are distributed if the Gaye's win the case.
The main point in the lawsuit is that Gaye III claims that Thicke's song "Love After War" copies Gaye's song "After the Dance." He accuses Thicke of "brazen copying" on two tunes that Thicke released several years ago called "I Want You" and "Million Dollar Baby." Thicke actually claimed Gaye as a songwriter in the liner notes of "Million Dollar Baby."
The feud between Thicke and the Gaye family began when Thicke preemptively sued Gaye's estate in an effort to establish that he did not steal any of Gaye's songs. He wanted to make sure everyone knew that "Blurred Lines" was an original composition and not a cover of a Marvin Gaye song. The original lawsuit angered the Gaye family and they have been throwing countersuits at Thicke ever since.
The messy legal proceedings are stacking on top of each other now and will take a long time to officially sort out. Do you think that Thicke is guilty of stealing Marvin Gaye's songs? Or do you think the Gaye family is attempting to steal Thicke's hard earned money that he made from "Blurred Lines?" Let us know what you think in the comments!
