Mary J. Blige's Father in Critical Condition After Ex-Girlfriend Stabbed Him During a Domestic Dispute
R&B super star Mary J. Blige's father, Thomas Blige, was taken to the hospital Thursday morning after what Battle Creek police say was a domestic dispute with his former girlfriend, resulting in physical violence.
Blige, 63, remains in critical condition after undergoing surgery at Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Police confirmed that Blige is the singer's father.
Police have reportedly arrested his 50-year-old ex-girlfriend on a charge of assault with intent to murder.
Police were called to the Arbors of Battle Creek, an apartment complex at 6:58 a.m. Thursday in response to an emergency 911 call. WOOD-TV reported police found Mr. Blige in his apartment at 200 Oakbrook Boulevard with three stab wounds, including one to his neck.
Blige's roommate, Michael Thomas, identified the suspect as Cheryl White. The roommate told WOOD-TV that Blige was in their apartment when he heard noises outside.
"He had heard some hissing sounds that he heard from outside, where the air was being let out of his tires," Thomas said.
He then said Blige ran outside to confront his attacker when he realized she was slashing the tires on his sport-utility vehicle, "That's when she attacked him," Thomas said.
He staggered inside, leaving blood on the sidewalk and in the snow outside the apartment building door, said the witness. "He came back in and yelled for me."
Friends and neighbors told NBC that Blige and White argued frequently. The woman was charged in October with aggravated domestic violence after hitting Blige in the head with a glass candlestick.
Blige is a former jazz musician and Vietnam War vet who left his daughter's life when she was four, according to the singer's biography. The R&B sensation who has also suffered a life of domestic violence in past relationships, drug abuse, and depression accredits her faith in God to her triumphant out come.
"In life, when you come through those really heavy situations, God is always unleashing those angels on you. God is the angel, it's constant," Blige said to Christian Post.
