The duo's name 'Mary Mary' was inspired by two women recorded in the Bible; Mary-mother of Jesus Christ, and Mary Magdalene.

In 2000, Mary Mary introduced in their urban contemporary gospel music, the elements of soul, jazz, funk, and hip hop. The duo broke into the music scene with their hit song "Shackles (Praise You) from the album Thankful.
