Matthew West spoke to BREATHEcast on his goals as a songwriter, sticking to being a storyteller, and his Christmas plans in New York City. Be sure to see what this amazing singer/songwriter has to say in the fourth and final installment of our interview series with him.

West was asked whether he would ever abandon the idea of using other people's stories to come up with the songs on his albums.

"Honestly, I don't think it's going to be tough because I don't plan on moving on from it," he said, "This story collection has kind of become just woven into the fabric of my creative process now. I don't know if I'll ever depart from it because it's something unique, nobody else does it. It impacts my life, it seems to have an impact on my life and other people's lives."

Although he does not have any plans to do things different, he knows there comes a time and season where messages and ideas that are not necessarily tied to a specific story come out.

"When the time comes for that I think it will be a seamless transition because really the songs for that are inspired by these stories, by and large aren't story songs," he explained, "What I mean by that is, if you heard 'Hello My Name is...' on the radio and didn't know the story behind it, you wouldn't necessarily need to know the story to understand the song. The same thing is true for the future songs I write."

He continued, "I've always be a story teller at heart and whether I'm telling my story or somebody else's story, hopefully it'll be a seamless transition. My biggest goal has been, everything I write, I want it to touch somebody's life and connect with them and hit their heart in a way that challenges them or encourages them."

This holiday season, West is putting out an original Christmas song exclusively through Family Christian Bookstores as part of a compilation album. "They commissioned me to write a new Christmas song based on the theme that they had. The theme they have for this Christmas is 'Believe'. I went to work and wrote two or three different Christmas songs. It was the idea that I kind of happened upon was this song 'A Christmas to Believe In'."

He explains it as a heartstring song that describes all the different colors of the season that in his mind make it something to believe in. The true meaning of Christmas is the "greatest story ever told" and that is why every year we can celebrate, said West.

In addition, West was invited by Dr. David Jeremiah to perform at "A Night of Celebration" on December 4 at the Beacon Theater in NYC alongside Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir and singer Nicole Nordeman.

However, the thing most exciting to him is bringing his wife and daughters to town to celebrate Christmas in the Big Apple.
