Melissa Rivers, Joan Rivers Daughter, Lawsuit Latest News: Negligence the Cause of Death for Comedienne?
The world was in grief when the famous comedian, Joan Rivers, died last September, 4 at the age of 81. Reports had confirmed that she had stopped breathing, due a cardiac arrest, during a minor surgery for her throat. However, new findings are looking to prove that her death was due to negligence.
Melissa Rivers, a TV host and producer, and the only child of the late comedienne with Edgar Rosenberg, will file a lawsuit against the Yorkville clinic in connection with her mother's death. The death would have been avoided if only necessary measures were taken up correctly.
The New York State Department of Health is continually investigating the clinic that attempted to aid Joan Rivers during her final moments, the Yorkville Endoscopy Clinic. A procedure was done on Joan last August 28. Various reports have shown that unidentified staff of the clinic saw Joan's physician take a selfie in the middle of the surgery, while the comedian was under anesthesia.
Dr. Lawrence Cohen had performed a scheduled endoscopy. Later on, he allegedly brought an unidentified personal ENT doctor of Rivers, which performed an unauthorized biopsy on Rivers' vocal chords. There was no signed consent pertaining to the said biopsy, which gave a conclusion that protocol had been violated.
Before performing any procedure, the federal law and the state require practitioners to get a medical certification clearance from the institution where they want to practice. Dr. Cohen had convinced his team that the ENT doctor, who performed the biopsy, will not be involved in the operation, but would be there as a spectator.
On that note, Dr. Cohen resigned from being the Director of Yorkville and is no longer a part of the clinic.
