Miley Cyrus' release of her new single "23" raised some eyebrows, but the release of the official music video for the track rose more than eyebrows. It has left some individuals with the idea that Cyrus is trying to capitalize off of black culture or the perception of "blackness".
Before I go into depth, "23" is produced by Mike Will Made Made it and features Wiz Khalifa and Juicy J. the song is an ode to Michael Jordan and his forever popular Jordan sneakers.
I'm not knocking Miley in the least bit, but we've seen white appropriation of the black culture for decades now mainly in "pop culture" and if Miley wants to embrace or feel embraced by a different demographic then by all means it's her God-given right. She's an artist that's what artists do; she is paid to entertain whether you find it hilarious, disgusting, or just a cry for attention.
If critics are going to start an all-out bash war they need target every artist that falls into the "white appropriation of black culture" category. I have yet to see Justin Bieber in the line of fire when it comes to this specific topic and he's really embraced black culture, but I'm not here to rant.
