Monsanto Sees Worldwide Protest in the "March Against Monsanto" this Past Weekend. Over 2 Million protesters across the world
This past Saturday, more than 2 million protesters in 436 cities across the world took to the streets, in a stand against agricultural business giant Monsanto and GMO's (genetically modified organisms). The Associate Press reported that the "March Against Monsanto" protests took place in at least 52 countries and 436 cities. Obviously, a huge world-wide impact.
The world-wide movement started with a simple FaceBook page that called for the May 25 demonstrations. The organizers call for boycotts against Monsanto and Monsanto-owned companies that use GMOs and call for GMO labeling. They also call for additional studies of the health effects of GMOs, a field that many feel has been repressed by lobbyists for large corporations.
GMO's are grown with certain traits in mind, making them larger or more easily producible for consumption. But, this often causes health issues, the advocate groups say. Monsanto is one of the largest producers of genetically modified seeds.
In the U.S., the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) supports voluntary labeling for foods produced via genetic engineering. But this year, President Barack Obama signed a bill that included a "Farmer Assurance Provision," which reportedly could make it more difficult to stop the sale of questionable crops. Critics of the bill named it the "Monsanto Protection Act", claiming that Obama's administration of the issue has been in support of the company that they have fought so hard to stop.
