NBA 2K14 Gameplay: Is 2K Sports Ruining The Game With Microtransactions? (VIDEO)
NBA 2K14 has been called one of the best sports games in modern times, but now glitches and microtransactions are slowly ruining the legacy of the game.
Initially it was the problematic internet servers during the holiday season and now magazines such as Sports Illustrated have revealed the game could be starting a pattern with microtransactions where gamers would have to buy objects in order for teams to progress against other teams.
According to Latin Post, this feature has been heavily disapproved by fans of the series, mainly because they believe it would be more logical to offer enticements centered on game play instead of currency. Sports Illustrated's Austin Wood clarified his point in an article telling 2K Sports to reduce the microtransactions.
"The fact remains that microtransactions-the purchasing of small (often cosmetic) items in a game using real money-are nothing more than a cash-grab and a crutch for subpar game design," said Wood to Sports Illustrated. "Players will generally purchase items with real money if they decide that accumulating the required in-game resources or virtual money is too tedious a process-that the gameplay isn't rewarding enough to justify investing the time. It's a disturbing trend that the gaming industry has grown to embrace, with NBA 2K14 regrettably among the guilty parties."
According to Latin Post, Wood is feeling hopeful because 2K Sports does an upright job of paying attention to consumer advice.
"Rather than propagating the Virtual Currency system by encouraging players to pay for the stats they want, why not reward players more thoroughly for winning against online opponents, raising their team ranking, or progressing through My Career? If items can be unlocked through enjoyable gameplay, which NBA 2K14 has in spades-the problem vanishes," said Wood to SI.
