Spike Lee's "Oldboy" Remake Review: Has Lee Become Irrelevant After the Flop of His Latest Movie? [TRAILER] [SPOILERS]
Spike Lee's latest effort is a remake of a Korean cult classic called "Oldboy," which was released last week. The original movie was by South Korean director Park Chan-wook and was released in 2003. The movie has had a hard time finding traction and gaining an audience over the holiday weekend, and has barely crested $1.5 million in sales. Critics speculate that the film will break $3 million by the year's end.
There are a couple contributing factors as to why Spike Lee's new movie "Oldboy" just isn't making the cut with American audiences. The first is that pretty much every critic that reviewed the film gave it mediocre to poor reviews.
Another opinion that many people have is that Spike Lee managed to kill his own film simply by calling it a "Spike Lee Film" rather than a "Spike Lee Joint." Some viewers speculated that this simple word exchange indicated that even Spike Lee didn't approve of the film.
It's hard to compete with great family themed films like "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" and "Frozen," both of which broke box office records this holiday season, but "Oldboy" is an ultra violent R-rated thriller. Who wants to go see that with their families on Thanksgiving?
Do you think that the "Oldboy" remake was doomed from the beginning, or do you think that Spike Lee was the sole factor as to why the movie is failing in theaters? Take a look at this trailer for the film and let us know what you think in the comments!
