Oscars 2017 Date, News: Jimmy Kimmel to Host 87th Academy Awards

"Jimmy Kimmel Live!" star Jimmy Kimmel is set to host the 87th Academy Awards.

The renowned host has already hosted several awards shows in the past, including the 2012 and 2016 Emmy Awards and the 2007 ESPYS. He has also hosted the American Music Awards five times. However, this will be the first time that Kimmel will be hosting the Oscars.

In September, Disney and ABC Television Group chief Ben Sherwood endorsed Kimmel for the role after he had earned praises for his hosting stint at the Emmys.

"We thought Jimmy elevated the Emmys. We thought Jimmy has earned it, and we're very hopeful that Jimmy will get the Oscar hosting gig," said Sherwood.

In November, it was confirmed that Kimmel was on the list of names considered to host the upcoming Oscars.

"Everybody's on the table right now. Like we said, we're still in our kitchen sink stage. Jimmy included. But we'll get there soon," told Todd and De Luca.

On Monday, Kimmel confirmed the news that he will host the Academy Awards next year.

"Yes, I am hosting the Oscars. This is not prank. And if it is, my revenge on @TheAcademy will be terrible and sweet," said Kimmel in a statement.

Meanwhile, Academy president Chery Boone Isaacs said she believes Jimmy has the qualities of all the great hosts.

"He knows who he is, he knows the audience and he knows how to captain a ship with many moving parts. We're thrilled he has agreed to host our show," she said.

The 89th Academy Awards airs on February 26 on ABC.
