PlayStation 4 Rumors: PSOne and PS2 Emulator with Updated Graphics on the Way for Sony?

PlayStation is rumored to be receiving a PSOne and PS2 game emulator to connect the old generation with the new.

Important to note is that this is only a rumor, and Sony remained mum on the subject when pressed for information by IGN. "We don't comment on rumors or speculation," Sony said.

This alleged emulator will go further than Sony's PlayStation Now that was just announced as a streaming service. Digital Foundry reported that a source said the old games would be coming with updated graphics as well. "Sony is actively pursuing the ability for older titles to run without the blurry upscaling seen on PS3, suggesting that native HD resolutions are being targeted," said the source.

The PS4 is not backwards compatible in any fashion, not even for PS3 games. Sony's Shushei Yoshida was asked about emulation being a possible solution for the problem last year, he replied, "We're not talking about our emulation plans as yet."

PS4 sold 4.2 million consoles from November 15 to December 31, it was also only released in the U.S. for over a month before it began to debut in other countries. It is now in 53 countries.

According to Polygon, Sony is looking to sell five million units by March 2014, and they appear to be way ahead of target. They sold one million on launch day alone.

"The momentum of the PS4 system keeps getting stronger and we couldn't be more thrilled gamers worldwide are enjoying the incredibly immersive gaming experiences along with deep social capabilities and entertainment provided by our network," Sony President Andrew House said in a prepared statement at the CES. "After a remarkable launch, we look forward to bringing even more exciting content and continuing to explore the power of the PS4 system by adding new features and services, including PlayStation Now, in 2014."

In addition to big console sales, House also stated 9.7 million games have been sold.
