PS4 Blue Light of Death: Some Sony Customers Received Already Broken Consoles on Opening Day
The Sony PS4 sold 1 million units in the first 24 hours of its availability, but it wasn't all fun and games for Playstation enthusiasts on day one. Some customers experienced the dreaded Blue Light of Death on their consoles the first time they tried to boot them up. The blue light appears on the console itself and means that something is very wrong with your device. The light on the console should go to white once the device fully turns on and is ready for use.
Sony issued a statement about the blue light and told customers that they were working to fix it immediately. They said, "The number of affected PS4 systems is less than 1 percent, which represents a very small percentage of total units shipped to date and is within range for a new product introduction. We understand the frustration of consumers that have had a problem and are working with them and our retail partners to help troubleshot issues and ensure affected units are exchanged."
The problem with the Blue Light of Death is reminiscent of the Red Ring of Death that Xbox 360 experienced upon its introduction. Microsoft was forced to extend the warranty of the original Xbox 360 to three years in order to effectively fix the problem. The warranty extension cost the company around $1 billion.
Will you be heading out and grabbing a PS4 anyway? Have you already purchased a PS4 and experienced the Blue Light of Death? Let us know in the comments!
